The annual election period (AEP) for Medicare plans is from October 15 to December 7 in 2012 for plans with an effective date of January 1, 2013. You may make changes to an existing plan or enroll in a new plan during this time including, but not limited to, enrollment in a Part D prescription drug plan.

From January 1 to February 14 each year Medicare Enrollees may drop their current plan and return to Original Medicare. If you do switch to Original Medicare you may also choose a Part D plan as well. In NY State you are also allowed to enroll in a "Medicare Supplement" (also known as Medigap) plan.

 Blue Cross Medicare offers a wide range of Medicare plans and serves a major portion of the country. Each plan may differ in cost depending on the level of benefits and the county in which you live. PPO plans otherwise known as Preferred Provider Organizations have a network of providers but also allow you to obtain services out of the network
(usually with a higher co-pay). A PPO plan is a good fit if you travel frequently. Empire's PPO plans for 2011 will travel with you, also offer additional services not covered by Original Medicare, and include prescription drug coverage.
