NY State has many Medicare health insurance plans to choose from and it is very important to choose the right plan. We have designed this website to help simplify the complex task of choosing which Medicare plan will fit your needs. Since Medicare only pays a portion of medical bills, and healthcare in America has become very expensive, most retirees realize that Medicare insurance is a very important and necessary decision. It is important to understand what Medicare does cover and how it works in order to make an educated decision.

If you are confused or simply need help to navigate through the Medicare process we have provided a toll free number listed at the top of this page and helpful
links to other valuable resouces. Here you can find information on Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage, and Part D Medicare.

The Original Medicare Plan

The Medicare Program is a federally managed health insurance program for people age 65 or older; people under age 65 who have certain disabilities; and people of all ages who have permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant (a condition referred to as end-stage renal disease).

Medicare's standard health plan, referred to as Original Medicare, offers two primary types of coverage: hospital and medical.

Part A: Hospital Coverage

Medicare Part A helps cover inpatient care services received in hospitals and critical access hospitals, as well as intermittent inpatient care received in skilled nursing facilities. For those who meet certain eligibility requirements, Part A also covers hospice care and some home health care services. Part A does not cover long term care.

Most people get Part A automatically when they turn 65. If you are disabled, you may be eligible three months before and three months after your 25th month of disability. The plan will notify you when your coverage begins. Part A is available at no cost to people who have worked, or whose spouses have worked, for at least 10 years and have paid Medicare taxes through their employer(s).

Part B: Medical Coverage

Medicare Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, and some additional services not covered by Part A (such as physical or occupational therapy). It also may cover medically required home health care services.

If you are interested in receiving Part B, you can sign up anytime during a 7-month period that begins 3 months before your 65th birthday. If you are disabled, you may be eligible three months before and three months after your 25th month of disability. Part B requires a monthly payment, or premium, for coverage. Generally, this payment is deducted from your Social Security check. The premium amount you pay is impacted by when you choose to enroll in Part B and is decided each year. In most cases, premium rates will increase by 10% for each full 12-month period that you could have had Part B, but did not enroll. Therefore, it is a good idea to consider enrolling in Part B as soon as you become eligible.
